At our November Board of Directors meeting, awards were granted to four organizations deserving commendation for their outstanding submissions and work, and we're grateful for each nonprofit joining forces with the FCIDD to "make these possibilities happen," as all four projects, totaling over $134,000, are transformative for those in the I/DD community.

First up: Penn-Mar Human Services (Penn-Mar) supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to live courageously and reach their full potential through personalized services in employment, residential living, day learning, and community access. Guided by a vision of inclusion, dignity, and independence, Penn-Mar works to break down barriers and create opportunities for healthy, meaningful lives—empowering individuals through personal growth, self-advocacy, and community engagement.

Penn-Mar Human Services is launching an initiative to enhance support and services in Carroll County. The organization purchased a building in Westminster, Maryland with the intention of undertaking a massive renovation to fit the needs of the people we support. These facilities will provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can thrive, learn new skills, and achieve their personal goals. The center will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities designed to enhance the learning and development of the individuals we support.

Penn-Mar's specific request is funding "smart" equipment in the kitchen space of the renovated building. The kitchen is more than a place to prepare meals; it is a hub of learning, creativity, and connection. For individuals with IDD, traditional kitchen environments can be overwhelming or inaccessible due to cognitive, sensory, or communication challenges. A smart kitchen addresses these barriers by integrating intuitive technologies such as voice-activated appliances, visual and auditory prompts, and step-by-step cooking guidance systems. Both the Baltimore and Carroll County Civitan Clubs supported the presentation of this project to the Foundation.

Beyond its functional benefits, the smart kitchen invites participants to take part in shared meals, contribute to group activities, and experience the pride of preparing food for themselves and others. It breaks down barriers to participation and creates a space where everyone—regardless of ability—can be seen, heard, and valued.

By investing in a smart kitchen, we are not simply upgrading a facility; together we are creating a platform for empowerment, inclusion, and lifelong learning. With the FCIDD's collaboration, and that of Civitan members from Baltimore and Carroll County, this vision comes to life and continues building a future where all people have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.
