March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month, a time to promote inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities in all areas of society. This month, the FCIDD is spotlighting the work of some of it's supported partners.

Empowering Through Innovation

Debut of the new cart!

Red Wiggler recently benefited from a grant by FCIDD, enabling the purchase of a new electric golf cart. This essential vehicle supports the farm's operations by transporting tools and produce, and it is integral to the employment program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, known as Growers. The golf cart not only facilitates daily tasks but also offers Growers the opportunity to develop driving skills, which are subsequently incorporated into their job descriptions.

Creating Impactful Opportunities

Before acquiring the new golf cart, Red Wiggler faced challenges with an unreliable, old cart that hampered both operations and skill development. With the new cart, 3 additional Growers were trained last year, and currently, 6 Growers include golf cart operations in their roles. This advancement is a testament to Red Wiggler’s commitment to meaningful employment and personal growth for its employees.

Community and Collaboration

The farm’s success is bolstered by community partnerships, such as Executive Director Woody Woodroof’s involvement with the Greater Silver Spring (MD) Civitan Club. The club’s support was instrumental in securing the FCIDD grant.

Red Wiggler Farm, which employs around 15 Growers and welcomes volunteers, fosters an environment where individuals with and without developmental disabilities work side by side, sharing knowledge and growing together. This inclusive and collaborative spirit is what makes Red Wiggler a thriving community.

Red Wiggler Community Farm exemplifies how empowering individuals and fostering inclusive environments can lead to vibrant and sustainable communities, and the FCIDD is honored to be able to be a small part of this great work!
