We're very happy to share an update on an FCIDD project grant awarded to Penn-Mar Human Services (Penn-Mar), a nonprofit supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) living courageously and reaching their full potential through personalized services in employment, residential living, day learning, and community access.

In an effort to increase service to those in Western Maryland, Penn-Mar purchased a building in Westminster, with the intention of undertaking a massive renovation to fit the needs of the people supported in their programs. Penn-Mar's specific request was to fund "smart" equipment in the kitchen space of the renovated building. The kitchen is more than a place to prepare meals; it is a hub of learning, creativity, and connection. For individuals with IDD, traditional kitchen environments can be overwhelming or inaccessible due to cognitive, sensory, or communication challenges. A smart kitchen addresses these barriers by integrating intuitive technologies such as voice-activated appliances, visual and auditory prompts, and step-by-step cooking guidance systems. Both the Baltimore and Carroll County Civitan Clubs supported the presentation of this project to the Foundation.

Beyond its functional benefits, the smart kitchen invites participants to take part in shared meals, contribute to group activities, and experience the pride of preparing food for themselves and others. It breaks down barriers to participation and creates a space where everyone—regardless of ability—can be seen, heard, and valued. Congratulations to Penn-Mar and thank you for allowing the FCIDD to play a part in "making possibilities happen" for those you serve!
