The Blue Bears Special Meals is unwavering in its mission to create a respectful work environment for individuals with I/DD, offering both part-time and full-time job opportunities with fair wages. This program is crafted to build confidence and enhance the well-being of individuals with I/DD by involving them in preparing fresh, balanced meals and baked goods for the community. With a commitment to dining excellence, they deliver healthy, French-inspired dishes, featuring daily specials for breakfast and lunch. The initiative also seeks to integrate disability into the local community, actively working to dispel fears and taboos around disability while fostering inclusivity and understanding.

The Blue Bears Special Meals initiative stands as a transformative model for integrating individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities into the workforce. By providing comprehensive training in kitchen operations, the program not only enhances culinary skills but also promotes independence and self-worth among its employees.

Every day, employees with I/DD engage in various kitchen tasks tailored to their unique abilities and pace, ensuring that everyone plays a vital role in the restaurant's operations. Tasks such as squeezing fresh oranges and lemons for juice, preparing quiche fillings, washing and chopping herbs, labeling preparations, and polishing silverware ensure that every employee feels included and valued, as their contributions are integral to the kitchen's success. The organization, now five years strong, has proudly employed 15 individuals with disabilities. Their grant request to the FCIDD this past September resulted in a grant for $8000 to purchase equipment for the kitchen.

Blue Bears Special Meals, based in Princeton, New Jersey, is the first I/DD nonprofit to receive a grant based solely on its own merits, independent of a Civitan club sponsorship. Presented at the September 2025 Board of Directors meeting, it was exhilarating to witness the Board expand its outreach in support of the mission of funding IDD programming and inclusivity, and we are proud to be supporters of the Blue Bears!
